Can You Drink the Tap Water in Vilnius?

Vilnius tap water is safe to drink and is supplied mainly from protected deep groundwater sources. Unlike cities that rely heavily on rivers or reservoirs, Vilnius draws water from underground aquifers before it is prepared and distributed by Vilniaus vandenys. The public supply is monitored under Lithuanian drinking water requirements.

Because the water is naturally filtered through layers of soil and rock, it generally needs less intensive treatment than surface water. Depending on the supply zone, aeration and iron removal may be used before distribution. This can give the water a clean but slightly mineral character that visitors may notice.

Naturally occurring iron or manganese can occasionally leave a light deposit, temporary discolouration or small particles, particularly after network work or when water has been standing in internal pipes. Run the cold tap until it is clear and cool. If an unusual colour, smell or residue continues, ask the accommodation manager or check the utility's current information.

Hotels, hostels and apartments connected to the municipal network can normally use tap water for drinking, brushing teeth, cooking and filling reusable bottles. In an older Old Town property, the condition of the building's internal plumbing may have more influence on the water at the tap than the public supply itself.

Bottled water is widely sold across Vilnius, but it is not generally required for safety. A filter is also unnecessary for most visitors and is mainly a personal choice for taste or mineral residue.
