FAQ & Questions!

Which North American country has the safest tap water?

Canada consistently ranks among the top countries in the world for tap water quality, with excellent infrastructure across all major cities and strict federal guidelines. The United States also has very high standards in most cities. Mexico is the clear outlier — tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Mexico for visitors.

Why is tap water unsafe in Mexico but safe in the United States and Canada?

The United States and Canada have heavily invested in water treatment infrastructure, protective catchment management, and strict regulatory enforcement over many decades. Mexico has treatment systems in place but infrastructure quality is inconsistent, ageing pipes cause contamination during distribution, and different local bacteria cause digestive issues even where water is technically treated.

What is Montezuma's Revenge?

Montezuma's Revenge is the colloquial name for traveller's diarrhoea contracted in Mexico, named after the Aztec emperor. It is one of the most searched travel health terms for the country and is typically caused by bacteria in contaminated water or food washed in local water. Most visitors to Mexico experience it at some point if they are not careful with water and food choices.

Is tap water safe in all Canadian cities?

Yes in all major cities and towns, with one important caveat — a significant number of First Nations communities across Canada have experienced long-term drinking water advisories due to underfunded infrastructure on reserves. Outside these communities, Canadian tap water in cities and towns is consistently safe and of excellent quality.
