Can You Drink Tap Water in Vietnam?

Tap water in Vietnam is unsafe for drinking due to inconsistent treatment standards and contamination in distribution networks. While water treatment plants exist in cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, the water often becomes contaminated as it passes through aging pipes and rooftop storage tanks that are not regularly cleaned. Most Vietnamese residents do not drink tap water directly. They use boiled water, bottled water, or filtered water from refill stations. Tourists should never drink tap water in Vietnam, even in major hotels, without boiling or filtering it first.

Use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and washing fruits and vegetables. Tap water may be safe for showering and washing hands with soap. Commercial ice from major hotels and restaurants is usually safe, but ice from street vendors or small establishments may be made from untreated tap water and should be avoided. Common waterborne illnesses include traveler's diarrhea, typhoid, hepatitis A, and cholera in some regions. Rural areas and smaller towns have even less reliable water treatment, making bottled water essential everywhere you travel in Vietnam.
