Tap water in Lanzarote is safe to drink in terms of meeting EU regulatory standards, but the island's unique geography means virtually all of its water supply comes from desalination. Lanzarote is one of the driest places in Europe — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve characterised by volcanic landscapes and almost no rainfall. The island has no rivers, no lakes, and almost no groundwater, making it entirely dependent on seawater desalination plants operated by the Canary Islands Water Council to supply its residents and approximately three million annual tourists.

Desalinated water is safe but distinctively flat in taste, with a mineral profile that most people find less palatable than mainland European tap water. The high mineral content and residual chlorination used in disinfection combine to create a taste that the vast majority of locals and visitors find unpleasant for direct drinking. This is not a contamination issue but a characteristic of the water source and treatment process.

Across Lanzarote's resort areas — including Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, and Costa Teguise — hotels universally provide bottled water in rooms and use filtered water in their restaurants and bars. The local population follows the same habit, routinely purchasing large water containers from supermarkets for home use. This is a deeply embedded cultural norm on the island and not an indication that the water is unsafe.

For visitors staying in self-catering accommodation, the practical approach is to purchase large water bottles from a supermarket on arrival. A 5–8 litre container is sufficient for several days of drinking and cooking needs and costs very little. Using tap water for showering, washing, brushing teeth, and general cooking is perfectly fine and carries no health risk.

Lanzarote's water infrastructure is well-maintained and regulated by the same EU framework that governs mainland Spain. The island's dependency on desalination is a geographical inevitability rather than a sign of poor water management. For an environmentally conscious approach, visitors can bring a reusable bottle with a built-in filter or invest in a filter jug during longer stays to reduce single-use plastic consumption.
