Can You Drink Tap Water in Sierra Leone?

Tap water in Sierra Leone is not safe to drink for visitors. The country is still recovering from the legacy of a decade-long civil war that ended in 2002, and water infrastructure remains severely underdeveloped. Even in Freetown, the capital, the Guma Valley Water Company supply is intermittent and not reliably treated to a safe standard for visitors.

Freetown is built on a peninsula of dramatic hills dropping to the Atlantic, and the city's water system struggles with topography, aging pipes, and a growing population. Hotels in the city centre and the Aberdeen and Lumley Beach areas provide safe bottled or filtered water for guests. Most expatriates and NGO workers in Freetown use bottled or filtered water exclusively.

The Freetown Peninsula's beaches — including Lumley Beach, Tokeh, River No. 2, and Bureh Beach — are the country's primary tourist draw and increasingly popular with West African and international visitors. Beach bars and guesthouses in these areas provide bottled water. Confirm your accommodation's water source on arrival, particularly at budget properties.

In the provinces — including Bo, Kenema, Makeni, and Koidu — water infrastructure is significantly less developed than in Freetown. Bottled water availability decreases considerably outside the capital. For any travel into the interior or to the Outamba-Kilimi National Park in the north, carry a quality filter and purification tablets.

Sierra Leone recorded a devastating Ebola outbreak in 2014–2016 that severely impacted health infrastructure, though this has since been rebuilt. The country experiences cholera outbreaks periodically, particularly during the rainy season (May–October). Use sealed bottled water throughout the country and carry a filter for any travel outside Freetown.
