Tap water in Somalia is not safe to drink for visitors. Decades of civil war, state collapse, and chronic insecurity have destroyed water infrastructure across the country. Tap water in Hargeisa is not safe for visitors, but bottled water is available and the security situation, while requiring careful planning, is more manageable than in the south.

Somalia experiences recurring severe droughts that compound water access challenges across the country. The 2022 drought was one of the worst on record, displacing millions and causing catastrophic water insecurity. Climate-related water stress is an ongoing and worsening challenge.
