Boiling tap water is absolutely essential in these countries as tap water is unsafe for drinking without treatment. Water systems lack adequate treatment, distribution infrastructure is severely compromised, and contamination is widespread throughout the network.

Tap water in these destinations commonly contains harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other pathogens that cause serious waterborne illnesses including traveler's diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, and dysentery. Never drink tap water without treatment.

If bottled water is unavailable, water must be boiled at a vigorous rolling boil for at least one minute (three minutes at high altitudes). Let water cool before drinking.
